Sustainable Energy Supply-a Necessity for
African Growth

Dear Reader,

Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (MASK) is uniquely positioned to meet the ever increasing demand for reliable power on the African continent. Being a world leading turnkey contractor of medium and large-scale diesel power plants, MASK has since 1992 been a dedicated player in the power sector in Africa committed to the local communities wherever we do business.

The construction, operation and maintenance of more than 50 projects throughout the continent has given us a unique insight in implementing projects in Africa enabling us to offer highly efficient power plants tailor-made to the needs of our customers even in the most challenging markets.

We cover every aspect of a project from developer/sponsor, equity owner and arranger of debt/equity financing through plant design, detailed engineering, construction as well as operation and maintenance.

We believe in the importance of providing technology transfer as well as utilizing the skills of local employ- ees through extensive training programs wherever we operate. Testament to this approach was the exacting recruitment process for selecting operations and mainte- nance personnel for the Rabai Power Plant in Mombasa, Kenya. Here MASK differentiated itself through its painstaking attention to detail in taking the time to get to know and relate to each and every applicant. That is why the Rabai O&M team is so loyal to MASK and its manner of doing business.

MASK commissioned the first phase of the 90 MW Rabai Power Plant in October 2009. During spring 2010, the second phase, utilizing full waste-heat-recovery plant, was commissioned. By utilizing the excess heat in the exhaust gas to generate steam in boilers used to produce additional MWs through a steam turbine generator, this plant is regarded as the most efficient thermal plant of its kind in East Africa.
We have what it takes to make a project bankable. Our in-depth knowledge in the technology combined with our financial skills give our customers, investors and lenders the comfort needed to make projects materialize.

MASK will remain dedicated to the African continent and contribute to its sustainable growth.

Yours sincerely,

M A S K Makes ipps BankaBle

Within the last 10 years, various implementations of electrification programs have led to a constantly growing demand for electricity in Africa. Conse- quently, markets have developed creating an evolv- ing commercial environment suitable for invest- ment and related activities.

Major power investments are made amongst others throughout various Independent Power Producer (IPP) programs ensuring the right balance between demand and supply of power.

IPPs will not only relieve governments from the financial burden of capacity expansion in the power sector but will also lead to more competition, high- er efficiency, and ultimately lower electricity rates for consumers.

An important and vital spin-off is technology trans- fer with ‘State-of-the-Art’ solutions and not least training and education of local employees to a high- er beneficial level for the country. Key is not the IPP investment itself, but whether the investment will yield benefits to all stakeholders on a win-win basis.
Over the past decade, many projects have been poorly conceived and badly managed and local/ international stakeholders have found themselves stuck in the middle of the project phase.

We believe that choosing the right partners is alpha and omega for a seamless IPP development.
Since 1997, MASK has been involved in IPP pro- jects and has over the years obtained the necessary expertise to bring IPP projects from cradle, through productive operating years, to retirement.

In the African mining industry, mines are often de- veloped in locations without existing infrastruc- tures and/or the power requirement of the mine is often higher than the available power capacity. This has led the mining industry to have own dedicated power supply.

MASK can supply power plants for the mining industry under fixed EPC terms, and the company can also operate and maintain the plants under long-term fixed priced O&M contracts.

Some mine owners wish to outsource the power supply, and MASK is capable of and interested in providing captive power with high availability on fixed terms to the African mining industry through the establishment of IPP companies. The needed electrical infrastructure within the mine can also be included.
